And now, a brief film review

Saw Avatar tonight.  Three hours of glorious extraterrestrial travelogue punctuated by superintensely badass action, all built on a framework of cliches, stock characters, and ham-handed sermonizing.  Now, I’m all about the wise stewardship of nature, and the evils of greed and war-mongering, and watching the Thundercat Dragonriders of Fiber-optic Endor do epic battle with the Colonial Space Marines working for Bob Executive and Colonel Brock McHardass, but come on, now.

It’s all about the visuals with this movie.  Certainly, if you’ve seen Aliens, Disney’s Pocahontas (or Malik’s interminable remake of that film, The New World), and Dances With Wolves, there is NOTHING plotwise that you haven’t seen before.  And the bad guys may be the thinnest, most cliched stock characters EVER CAPTURED ON FILM. But HOLY CRAP, does it look good.
